The Elder Scrolls Online is entering one of the most transformative periods in its history. As 2026 unfolds, The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is introducing sweeping changes that will redefine how players approach combat, builds, and class identity.
From making future DLC content free to adding a new battle pass system and rolling out full class reworks, ESO is undergoing a massive evolution. However, one of the most important updates coming soon is the introduction of Class Mastery skill lines—a system designed to strengthen pure class builds and close the power gap with subclass setups.
Let’s break down everything you need to know.
With the introduction of subclassing, players gained the ability to mix and match skill lines across classes. While this led to powerful and creative builds, it also created a problem: pure class builds often felt weaker by comparison.
Subclass builds could cherry-pick the strongest DPS, tanking, or healing abilities from multiple classes. Meanwhile, players who wanted to stay true to a single class identity were at a disadvantage.
To solve this, the developers are introducing a new Class Mastery system that reinforces class identity without punishing players for staying pure.
Each class will receive a Class Mastery skill line containing five new passive abilities.
Players will:
- Choose two out of five Class Mastery passives
- Spend no skill points to activate them
- Further define their build’s role and playstyle
These passives are designed to:
- Increase damage output
- Improve sustain and resource generation
- Enhance survivability
- Reinforce thematic class identity
The goal is clear: Playing a pure class should feel competitive—if not superior in certain situations—to subclass builds.
Here’s a look at some early examples revealed by the developers.
Sorcerer – Implosion
A shock-based execute-style passive that increases proc chance based on the enemy’s missing health. The lower the target’s HP, the higher the chance of bonus shock damage.
This leans heavily into the Sorcerer’s lightning theme and improves late-fight burst potential.
Nightblade – Critical Motivation
This passive upgrades Hemorrhage to generate Ultimate based on Weapon Critical chance.
Nightblades are known for:
- High crit damage
- Strong ultimate generation
This mastery reinforces both themes and enables faster ultimate cycling.
Dragonknight – Recursive Flame
When Dragonknight damage-over-time effects expire, they apply a stacking flame effect for 12 seconds, increasing in damage per stack.
Given that the Dragonknight rework is launching in Update 49, this mastery further emphasizes the class’s DOT-heavy identity.
Warden – Nature’s Bounty
Upgrades Nature’s Gift to restore Magicka or Stamina to allies.
This mastery enhances the Warden’s group-support identity, especially for healers and support builds.
Necromancer – Pound of Flesh
When taking damage, you have a scaling chance (based on missing health) to heal and restore stamina.
This survivability-focused passive is especially appealing for:
- Tank builds
- PvP players
- Sustain-heavy setups
Arcanist – Self-Perpetuated Fate
Upgrades Implacable Outcome to generate maximum Crux once every 15 seconds.
This allows burst combos like back-to-back Fatecarver beams, significantly increasing damage windows.
Templar – Hold the Line
While Sacred Ground is active:
- Gain a damage shield
- Restore resources
- Generate Ultimate if the shield breaks
This mastery reinforces the Templar’s “stand your ground” identity and strengthens solo, PvP, and tank builds.
The direction is promising, but some concerns remain.
Currently, subclass builds still benefit from stacking the strongest three skill lines for their role. Two passive selections may not fully bridge the gap.
Possible improvements could include:
- Allowing three passive selections
- Introducing more ability-enhancing mechanics
- Scaling effects based on number of class abilities slotted (similar to Dragonknight’s recent rework passives)
The Dragonknight rework already demonstrated how powerful class-focused incentives can be. Extending that philosophy to all classes would further strengthen pure builds.
- Update 49 (March 9): Full Dragonknight rework
- Update 50 (Summer 2026): Planned release for Class Mastery system
- Warden rework and Werewolf updates are also expected around Update 50
If the timeline holds, Update 50 could be one of the biggest combat overhauls in ESO history.
The Class Mastery system represents a bold step forward for The Elder Scrolls Online. It directly addresses community concerns and reinforces class fantasy—something MMO players deeply value.
